Mirriam’s daily life has been shaped by long roads.
As a mother of six children living in rural Malawi, even basic tasks required exhausting travel. Whether grinding maize, seeking medical care, or purchasing fertilizer for the farming season, Mirriam often spent hours walking to distant trading centers.
“If a child became sick, reaching a clinic was a struggle,” she recalls.
Despite these challenges, Mirriam and her husband have continued working tirelessly to care for their family. One of their sons, Happy, lost the ability to speak after suffering severe malaria as a young child. Today, the family communicates with him using sign language and loving patience.
Another son, Godly, dreams of becoming a teacher. Each school day, he leaves home at 6:00 a.m. and walks nearly two hours each way just to attend classes.
But life has begun to change.
Through Pamoza’s investment in community-based services, families like Mirriam’s now have closer access to a maize mill, healthcare, and agricultural support. What once required an entire day can now often be accomplished within hours, giving mothers more time to care for their families, work their farms, and build a better future.
“Now we feel supported,” Mirriam says with a smile. “The services are close to us, and our lives have become easier. We are farming better, our children are healthier, and we have hope for the future.”
This Mother’s Day, we celebrate mothers like Mirriam, women whose strength, sacrifice, and perseverance continue to transform their families and communities every single day.
